Derek then graduated law school in 1987 from William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. After law school, Derek relocated to Indianapolis, where he began his practice concentrating in the areas of insurance defense litigation and coverage. In his early years, Derek tried many jury trials throughout Indiana. Derek’s practice later expanded to defending insurance companies in both State and Federal courts nationwide in first-party bad faith coverage disputes, including handling jury trials in Nevada, Wyoming, and Texas. Derek currently concentrates his practice on defending third-party personal injury and property claims, primarily arising from auto accidents, as well as premises liability claims. He also defends insurers on first party matters, including underinsured/uninsured claims, as well as insurance coverage disputes, and bad faith. In addition to working for property and casualty insurance companies and their insured’s, Derek also has experience defending life, health, and disability carriers for all types of first party claims and disputes.
Derek has extensive jury trial experience in the fields of insurance defense and coverage, with most of his trial experiences taking place in all regions of Indiana. Derek completed his mediator’s training in Indiana over twelve years ago and mediates personal injury cases in his Carmel office, as well as via Zoom.
Derek is a member of the Indiana and Illinois State Bar Associations. When not working, Derek enjoys playing and coaching tennis. He is a Board member of the recently opened Pearson Automotive Tennis Club located in Zionsville. Throughout school, and as a younger adult, Derek played competitive soccer and lacrosse, but recently chose to concentrate on tennis…..lower risk of injury! Derek’s favorite times are spent traveling and laughing with his wife Joanne, his two adult sons (and their fantastic wives), as well as his grandson.
